Symborg improves yields of cereals and legumes by treating the seeds
Symborg will be one of the companies present at the World Seed Congress 2018 that will be held in Brisbane, Australia, from 3 to 6 June. This international conference organised by the International Seed Federation, ISF, is the main world event for the seed industry and has been held since 1924. The event attracts over 1,500 delegates from the most important companies in the sector and brings together researchers and agricultural producers from all over the world.
The ISF is a non-governmental organisation, representing the interests of the seed sector, and Symborg joined it last year, after being announced as one of its members in the previous international conference held in Budapest in 2017.
Seeds are a key market for Symborg. The company develops solutions based on microorganisms for application of its products through the treatment of seeds of various types of crops, particularly cereals and legumes. The seed treatment improves the amount and quality of the crops and their ability to withstand diseases and other phytosanitary risks. Seed treatment also reduces the number of unproductive units, helping to avoid wasting resources on seeds that don’t germinate, and enables applications with lower doses, reducing the costs of treatment acquisition, transport and application.
Symborg provides seeds of grain cereals (corn, soybean, sunflower and legumes in general) with microorganisms that become future beneficial agents for plant development. In the case of the mycorrhizal inoculant Resid HC, this is based on the mycorrhizal fungus Glomus iranicum var. tenuihypharum, discovered and patented by Symborg.
Infective units of this Glomus are able to remain inactive for a long time on the seeds until the seeds germinate and start to develop roots. Then, this powerful Glomus activates and starts to colonise the roots, forming a symbiosis with them. They produce abundant extramatrical mycelium and this makes them develop further and explore a greater volume of soil, helping to absorb nutrients and water from the soil.
With more abundant and balanced nutrition, the plant achieves a more controlled hormonal balance and a better response towards any type of abiotic stress. The plant increases its physiological and photosynthetic activity, improving crop yields.
This powerful Glomus also has a high survival capacity even in saline soils and is compatible with the fertilisation protocols currently used in conventional agriculture. The treatment is based on a natural biological ingredient and does not produce unwanted residues in the plants nor affect their genetic characteristics. This method is 100% compatible with the environment.
Production increase percentages
Numerous field trials performed on varieties of corn have shown average production increases of 8% compared to untreated crops. All varieties of corn plants grown from seeds treated with the Symborg product generate ears of greater size and weight and have an increased number and size of grains. The same occurs with other cereals: production increases in wheat vary from 9.7% to 16% depending on the variety; in barley, the tonnes harvested per hectare are increased between 8.5% and 15% depending on the variety, and in soybean, the mean increases were 8.5%.
Treating seeds before sowing has been shown to be an effective method against many pathogenic agents and increases the production yield of many crops. Scientific knowledge in this field has come a long way in recent years and seed treatment has become an important approach to meeting the demands of productivity and profitability of modern agriculture.
