Symborg increases the physiological activity of the plant of tomatoes grown in sandbags

MycoUp of Symborg has been shown to improve efficiency in water use, and Shelf life on a planting of Canario type tomatoes, grown in sandbags under greenhouse conditions. The biofertilizer of Symborg has proved its effectiveness in a study developed by the Research Center for Soil Science and Applied Biology of Segura and the Scientific Research Center CEBAS-CSIC in a planting located in Mazarrón, a town near Murcia, in Spain.

MycoUp is a powerful inoculant of the mycorrhizal fungus Glomus iranicum var tenuihypharum discovered by Symborg and base of their mycorrhizal products. The aim of the study was to examine the ability of MycoUp when roots were colonized in this type of substrate and evaluate its performance in the tomato crop.

Methodology
The study methodology consisted of comparing MycoUp treated plants, and untreated plants within the same greenhouse. Several rows of similar plants were chosen and MycoUp was applied only to some of them through the drip irrigation system. Later it was found that colonization with the fungus Glomus iranicum var tenuihypharum had been effective in the selected rows. Throughout the crop growth cycle different parameters were measured in both types: rows of plants with mycorrhizal inoculant and untreated rows, which were used as control plants for comparison. The behavior of tomatoes in 12 days after harvesting was also measured.

Conclusions
1. Increased Plant water use
One of the parameters measured was the plant efficiency in the use of water, and it was higher in plants treated with MycoUp. In the first months of the trial, untreated plants show more efficiency, but in January and February, coinciding with the time of maximum production and increased abiotic stress, efficiency of plants treated with MycoUp in water use was a 22-30% higher, which means greater efficiency in unfavorable conditions.
2. Better commercial size
If you only take into account the tomatoes that meet minimum commercial standards net production is even greater because it was 14.0 kg m2 in inoculated plants compared to 13.1 kg m2 of the control plants, 6.4% more.
3. Increased shelf life.
In the post-harvest days, the weight loss of the fruits in inoculated plants was lower. Tomato plants treated with Symborg´s fungus and harvested in February and April lost a 7.2% and 3.2%, respectively. In contrast, untreated tomatoes had a loss on identical date of a 7.7% and 3.6%. The differences appears from the fourth day of storage. In addition, regardless of the harvested month, post-harvest fruit firmness was higher (up 11%) for those treated with MycoUp.

Test conditionstomates
The study was carried out in a commercial farm of the company “Paloma” located in the town of Mazarrón, Murcia (Spain). The experimental plot was inside a greenhouse of 14,000 m2, type multi-tunnel, with polycarbonate walls, plastic roof, and ventilation in a single opening. The variety of commercial tomato Canario was Ramyle RZ F1 (Rijk Zwaan) type – grafted on the emperor pattern (Rijk Zwaan). The cultivation was carried out in sandbags. The design of the plantation was 0.5 m between plants and 2.7 m between lines, with two stems per plant.

The base of the Symborg biotechnology is the famous fungus discovered by the company, Glomus iranicum var tenuihypharum. This mycorrhizal forming fungus is a powerful enhancer that has proved effective in most of the crops.
